British kids don't enjoy reading

London: Excessive use of Internet, TV and video games have started taking toll on reading habits in Britain kids. Currently, children showing a 'worrying shift' in their reading habits are not reading books, comics, magazines and even material available on websites. All these changes have shown a decline in span of last seven years.

The study showing its concern has demanded an immediate campaign to inculcate reading habit among children. Shocking and surprising facts have come out from study which has discussed at length the issue.

The most alarming point in the study is that one fifth of surveyed kids expressed that they would be embarrassed on being seen with a book by friends.

National Literacy Trust which conducted the study have concluded that reading is on decline as children are not getting time from internet, TV and video games.

The study has found out that 33.5 percent youngsters agreed that reading was 'cool' however, the figure fell to 14 percent among boys 14 to 16. The most alarming facts came out from 17 percent who said that they would be "embarrassed if my friends saw me read".

The study while maintaining that reading is 'essential' for children stressed that children reading outside their textbook lessons perform better in their exams.

To inculcate reading habit among children, the study has called for a parents and teachers attention on children. They need to set aside at least 10 minutes a day for reading with children and have exhorted for a national campaign to inspire children to read. The method was successfully used to develop people's renewed interest in sport.
